The Summer Garden: A Bounty of Beauty

June 2019

“Summer afternoon, summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.” – Henry James

Ahh summer! In Oregon, we love the summer garden. It is full of abundance, of flowers, fruits and vegetables and small creatures that help the garden in all its glory. We grow flowers of all kinds, and whether they are the jewels of the garden or adorning our homes in vases, we love flowers. There is also the beauty of the vine-ripened tomatoes which we wait all year for, and the sparkling grapes that promise the joy of harvest time. We adore the hummingbirds, dragonflies, and butterflies that flit through our gardens. And in the heat of the day we appreciate the coolness of a fountain or the depths of a summer pond. These paintings represent a vision of summer, and can bring you a sense of anticipation as we approach summer in the Northwest.

Oregon Perceptions: Seeing Beauty in the Everyday

June 2018

It is the function of art to renew our perception. What we are familiar with we cease to see. Anais Nin

Oregon is a vastly spectacular piece of the world. Whether we are looking at the monolithic rock formations that are the splendor of our coastline, or the amazing color-banded hills of the central part of our state, we can see unique beauty on a grand scale. Or perhaps we are walking in the woods, or our own backyard where we may see the glow of small mushrooms springing up from the earth or the delicate drops of the bleeding heart flowers. These original watercolors will engage us to see again the familiar beauty of the place we call home.

Small Pleasures Show

December 2013-January 2014

These nine paintings are a series of small white flower paintings.

They were painted for the Small Pleasures Invitational at the Jacob's Gallery in Eugene, Oregon.  Everything in the show needed to be 12" or smaller, so these are 6" x 6".  I wanted to explore the relationship between color and the crispness of white and how that might be shown in painting colorful white flowers.   All works are copyright protected.
